Jael-Marie Guy: Growing Through the Game
Hudson Valley, New York - From moving around the world in a military family to representing the Philippines internationally and competing at Brown University, Jael-Marie Guy’s journey is built on adaptability, consistency, and a deep love for soccer.
For Jael-Marie Guy, soccer has always been more than a sport. It has been a constant in a life shaped by movement.
Growing up in a military family meant relocating frequently. With both parents serving in the U.S. Army, Guy spent much of her childhood adjusting to new environments and new communities.
But wherever her family went, one thing remained the same.
“Soccer was always there,” she says.
She began playing at just five years old, and the game quickly became the one consistent thread connecting each chapter of her life.
“Every place we moved, joining a soccer team helped me build friendships and feel at home.”

Learning to Adapt
Frequent relocation might challenge many young athletes, but for Guy it became an advantage.
Each move meant a new team, new teammates, and a new style of play. Early in her career, she learned how to adapt quickly to unfamiliar environments, an ability that continues to shape her mindset today.
One of the most notable transitions came when her family moved from Germany to New York.
In Germany, the soccer culture emphasized technical play and a different pace of the game. Returning to the United States and competing at a higher level through the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) brought a new set of demands.
“The style of play was definitely more aggressive and competitive,” she explains.
At the time, Guy was still developing physically. She describes herself as a smaller player growing up, lean and fast, relying on speed, technical ability, and consistency to compete.
Those attributes soon caught the attention of college programs.

The Road to College Soccer
Participation in ECNL competitions opened the door to the college recruiting process, where coaches evaluate players through showcases and identification camps.
One of those opportunities led Guy to a camp hosted by Brown University.
After the coaching staff saw her performance in person, communication between both sides continued.
Eventually, she committed to the program and began her collegiate career with the Brown Bears.
Her first fall season with the team marked an important milestone in her development as a player.
“It went really well,” she says. “I learned a lot and it was a great experience.”

Representing the Philippines
Alongside her college journey, Guy has also begun building an international career.
Two years ago, she earned the opportunity to represent the Philippines at the youth national team level, competing with the U-17 squad.
The experience introduced her to international competition for the first time.
Then, in December, she reached another major milestone, making her senior debut with the Philippines Women's National Football Team.
For a young player still early in her collegiate career, the experience marked an exciting step forward.
A Mindset of Daily Growth
Despite her achievements, Guy approaches the game with a long-term perspective.
Rather than focusing only on distant goals, she emphasizes the importance of small, consistent improvements.
“I always ask myself how I can be better than I was yesterday,” she explains.
That mindset keeps her focused on daily progress rather than external expectations.
“I try to take small steps every day. Those little improvements eventually add up.”
It’s a philosophy influenced heavily by the guidance she has received from her parents.
Her father often reminds her that consistency is the key to improvement, while her mother emphasizes controlling what can be controlled, habits like sleep, nutrition, and training discipline.

A Foundation of Support
Throughout her journey, Guy credits her parents as the most important influences in her life.
“They’ve been there through everything,” she says.
From early youth teams to international travel and college competition, their presence has been constant.
That support system, combined with the lessons learned from moving around the world, helped her develop the maturity and perspective needed to navigate high-level soccer.

Preparing for the Future
During the college offseason, Guy continued developing her game with Hudson Valley Crusaders, a summer league team that brings together players from different colleges and countries.
The experience allowed her to train and compete alongside athletes who had already spent several years in the college game.
“For me as a freshman, it helped a lot to see how more experienced players approach the game,” she explains.
Those lessons helped prepare her for the demands of future seasons at Brown.

The Joy of the Game
When Guy reflects on what keeps her motivated, the answer remains simple: love for the sport.
Soccer has been the bridge connecting friendships, opportunities, and experiences across multiple countries and teams.
For young players hoping to follow a similar path, her advice focuses on that same foundation.
“If you love the game and stay consistent, everything else will come with time.”
