Coco Thistle: Resilience, Passion, and the Love of the Game
en mar 29 2026
Southern California - From growing up on the fields of San Diego to stepping into a professional environment with Sporting JAX, Coco Thistle’s journey reflects dedication, resilience, and a deep connection to the sport.
For Coco Thistle, soccer was never just another childhood activity. From the moment she was introduced to sports at a young age, the game stood out.
“My parents put me in almost every sport when I was little,” she recalls. “But soccer was the one I naturally gravitated toward.”
She began playing at just three years old, first in small recreational programs before moving into a competitive club environment with San Diego Surf, one of the most respected youth development programs in the United States.
Thistle would spend more than a decade growing as a player within that environment.
“I was there from about six years old until I turned eighteen,” she says. “Those fields were basically where I grew up.”
The club’s structure, coaching staff, and competitive culture helped shape her development and prepared her for the next stage of her career.
“That environment is a big reason I’m here today.”

Discovering Her Path Early
By the time she was around ten years old, Thistle had already begun envisioning a future in soccer.
Her coaches noticed her potential early, and she was consistently competing in high-level youth competitions, including ECNL showcases that attract college scouts from across the country.
Those tournaments eventually opened the door to college soccer opportunities.
She initially began her collegiate career at the University of Colorado before transferring to University of California, Berkeley, where she spent three seasons competing at the Division I level.
“Cal was an amazing experience,” she says. “The coaching staff, my teammates, being close to home, it was a really great environment.”
The Work Behind the Talent
While Thistle’s talent was clear early in her career, she believes one factor has always defined her as a player: work ethic.
As a teenager, she began incorporating additional training outside of regular team sessions, fitness work, individual touches, and extra preparation.
“I started doing extra training when I was about fourteen,” she explains. “That became part of who I am as a player.”
Her approach is simple: control the elements that depend on effort.
“I try to be the first one at the field and the last one to leave,” she says.
That mentality carried into her college career, especially as the level of competition increased.
“When you’re surrounded by better players, you have to find ways to push yourself even more.”
A Challenge Few Athletes Expect
During her junior year of college, Thistle faced one of the most difficult moments of her life.
She was diagnosed with lung cancer.
At the same time, she was also dealing with a back injury that required her to redshirt that season.
For many athletes, such a diagnosis could have meant stepping away from the sport entirely. For Thistle, the mindset was different.
“There wasn’t really a doubt in my mind,” she says. “I just kept moving forward.”
Her determination to return to the field became an inspiration to many people around her, teammates, coaches, and staff who saw her continue pursuing her goals despite the circumstances.
“It wasn’t ideal,” she says calmly. “But I never felt like it was going to stop me.”
Entering the Professional Game
Today, Thistle is beginning the next chapter of her career with Sporting JAX, a professional club competing in the USL Super League.
Although she has only recently joined the team, the transition has already been eye-opening.
“The speed of play is definitely higher,” she says. “Everyone here was the best player on their team before.”
What stands out the most is the shared commitment across the squad.
“In a professional environment, everyone wants to get better every day,” she explains. “This is their job, and they’re here because they love the game.”
For Thistle, that mentality feels natural.
Lessons From the Journey
Looking back on her career so far, Thistle recognizes something she wishes she had understood earlier.
For years, she was focused almost entirely on the next step, earning a scholarship, getting playing time, pursuing a professional opportunity.
But that constant focus on the future sometimes made it difficult to appreciate the present.
“I think I spent a lot of time thinking about the next goal,” she says. “I wish I had taken more time to enjoy the moment I was in.”
It’s a lesson she now shares with younger players.
The Power of Joy in the Game
When asked what advice she would give to young athletes, Thistle returns to the simplest element of the sport: enjoyment.
Too many players, she believes, become consumed by performance metrics, recruitment pressure, and external expectations.
Instead, she encourages players to remember why they started.
“If you love going to practice and love playing the game, your performance will speak for itself,” she says.
Many of her own early memories reflect that idea, watching legendary Barcelona teams on television and kicking the ball around with her family in the backyard.
Those moments helped shape her relationship with the sport.
The People Who Inspire Her
During the most difficult period of her health journey, one person in particular stood out as a source of inspiration: her grandmother.
Years earlier, her grandmother had battled breast cancer and fully recovered.
Seeing her strength helped shape Thistle’s perspective during her own diagnosis.
“She’s perfectly healthy and living a great life now,” Thistle says. “That really helped me stay positive.”
Her parents, teammates, and trainers also played crucial roles, offering constant encouragement throughout the process.

Moving Forward
Today, Coco Thistle continues building her career in the professional game with the same mindset that carried her through youth soccer, college competition, and personal challenges.
Hard work, resilience, and a genuine love for the sport remain at the center of everything she does.
And as her journey continues, one thing remains clear:
The passion that started when she was three years old is still driving her forward.
